France struggles to control forest fire near Saint Tropez
A local official said, Wednesday, that fire teams in France have struggled all night to contain a forest fire in the hills near the coastal town of Saint Tropez.
An official in the local administration in the Far region in southern France, where the fire broke out on Monday, stated that the fire was still burning until the early hours of Wednesday morning.
French President Emmanuel Macron left his nearby summer resort on Tuesday to thank firefighters for their efforts.
Harsh weather has swept across large parts of the Mediterranean in the past few weeks, with forest fires from Spain and Greece to Turkey raising questions about global climate change and states’ readiness to confront it.
