Gaza Bleeds… A Record Number of Deaths and No End in Sight

A grim record of casualties in Gaza, with no end in sight, as Israel resumes its military campaign and warns of even tougher days ahead.

Since the resumption of Israeli military operations last Tuesday, at least 673 Palestinians have been killed in the besieged and devastated Gaza Strip, according to the territory’s Ministry of Health.

With this latest toll, the total number of deaths since the war began on October 7, 2023, has surpassed 50,000, according to the same source.

Figures from the Ministry of Health and the United Nations indicate that most of the victims are women and children. The actual number is likely much higher, as thousands are believed to be still trapped under the rubble.

The death toll surged as Israel resumed its war against Hamas on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire in Gaza.

Tuesday’s airstrikes marked one of the deadliest days for Palestinians since the war began, with over 400 killed by Israeli fire, according to medical sources. By Wednesday, Israel had also resumed its ground operation in the territory.

On Sunday night, Hamas political bureau member Ismail Barhoum was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza.

Barhoum is the fourth Hamas political bureau member to be killed in Israeli airstrikes over the past week.

Dwindling Hope

Gaza’s residents hold little hope for a slowdown in the killings, as Israeli officials warn that worse is yet to come.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant warned Hamas over the weekend that Israel would maintain a permanent presence in parts of Gaza unless hostages were released.

Shortly after the renewed campaign began, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated: “I want to assure you: this is just the beginning.”

Almost the entire population of Gaza, over two million people, has been displaced. The territory’s healthcare system has suffered severe damage.

EU Warning

During her visit to Israel on Sunday, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called for an “immediate return” to the ceasefire to halt the “destruction of Gaza.”

Talks Stalled

Ceasefire negotiations have stalled since January 19.

A “Voluntary Migration” Plan

Israel’s Defense Ministry announced a new initiative allowing Palestinians to leave Gaza “voluntarily,” a move condemned by Israeli NGO “Peace Now” as forced displacement.
