Sudan: Final Stage of Political Process Begins


The tripartite mechanism comprising the United Nations, the African Union (AU) and the African Union (IGAD) launched the last phase of the political process to overcome the crisis in Sudan on Sunday.

“The signatories of the framework agreement will launch the final phase of the political process aimed at reaching a final and fair agreement,” the CMA said in a statement on Saturday.

The inauguration ceremony will be held at the Friendship Hall, in the presence of the military and civilian signatories of the Framework Agreement, as well as representatives of civil society, human rights and women’s groups and religious leaders.

The Mechanism reported that the inauguration will be followed by broad consultations on issues of final agreement, starting with a conference on the dismantling of the structure of the former regime, which will take place from 9 to 12 January.

“Upcoming working groups and conferences are expected to produce road maps on issues considered in the final deal,” including the dismantling of the previous regime, the assessment of the peace deal, transitional justice, security and defense sector reform, and the resolution of the eastern Sudan crisis, the Sudan Tribune reported.

“On Friday, the dismantling committee, whose work was frozen by General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan in his first decision after the October 25, 2021 coup, held an internal workshop to evaluate its performance and then present its experience at the disbanding conference.

The conference is scheduled to discuss: Corruption and Empowerment in 3 decades, the political dimensions of the process of dismantling the 30th of June system, international standards, governing principles and options in the dismantlement processes, the legal framework governing the dismantling process, the experience of the Commission of the dismantling of the 30th of June system, and comparative international experiences in the recovery of looted public assets and funds.

The current political process is being conducted on the basis of a transitional constitution document prepared by the Steering Committee of Lawyers in September, which has found broad domestic and international acceptance.

The document stipulates that civilians will assume full power during the two-year transition period. It also includes unifying the army, cleansing it of party affiliations, removing it from politics and engaging in economic activities and commercial investment activities, with the exception of military industrialization and missions, dismantling the corruption of the Brotherhood regime, launching a comprehensive process to achieve justice and transitional justice, reforming the police, intelligence and security apparatus, and placing it under the supervision of the prime minister.
