Google tests an AI-only version of its search engine

This new feature is available to subscribers of the AI Premium plan on Google One. It can be accessed from the search results page by clicking on the “AI Mode” tab, located alongside existing options such as Images and Maps.

In a blog post, Robbie Stein, Vice President of Product, stated:

“We’ve heard from our premium users that they want AI-generated responses for more of their searches.”

Google One’s AI Premium plan is a $19.99-per-month service that provides additional cloud storage and exclusive access to certain AI-powered features.

Currently, Google offers AI Overviews, AI-generated summaries that increasingly appear above traditional hyperlinks in search results for users across more than 100 countries. In May, Google began integrating ads into AI Overviews.

With the introduction of AI Mode, users will see even more comprehensive AI-generated summaries, accompanied by hyperlinks to referenced web pages. The traditional ten blue links will be replaced by a search bar allowing users to ask follow-up questions.

Google stated that AI Mode is powered by a customized version of its Gemini 2.0 model, equipped with advanced inference capabilities that make it better suited to handling complex queries.
