Historical relations – Sultan of Oman receives Tahnoun bin Zayed


On Thursday, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq bin Taimur Al Said received National Security Advisor Sheik Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

During the meeting, they discussed the deep-rooted fraternal relations between the two countries and continued cooperation and joint coordination in order to achieve their mutual interests and the aspirations of their brotherly peoples for sustainable development and prosperity.

During the meeting, Sheik Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan conveyed to the Sultan of Oman the greetings of Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, wishing him the best of health and happiness for Oman and its brotherly people, continuous progress, elevation and prosperity.

Sultan of Oman Sheik Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan conveyed his greetings to the President and Vice President of the UAE and Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, wishing the UAE and its people further progress and prosperity.

Historical relations

The visit by Sheik Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Emirati National Security Adviser, culminates in the historic fraternal relations between the two countries.

Relations between the two countries have witnessed noticeable development in all fields during the era of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. The momentum in the relations of brotherhood and cooperation between the two countries has continued, and has increased with the inauguration of Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said nearly two years ago.

Deepening ties with Oman is a key priority for the UAE leadership, as expressed by Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan during his first meeting with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq – to offer condolences on the death of his late colleague Sultan Qaboos bin Said – the day after Sultan Haitham assumed power on January 12, 2020.

Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said that relations between the UAE and Oman were, are and will remain, with God’s permission and the will of their leadership. The fraternal ties between the peoples of the two countries are deeply rooted in history and are based on solid foundations, such as geographical proximity, common values, customs and traditions, relations of kinship and friendship, strategic depth and other factors that make relations between the two countries special and distinct.

For his part, Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq affirmed the strength of the deep-rooted brotherly relations between the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman and their two brotherly peoples, and the keenness of their leadership to continue to document them for the benefit of both countries.. I wish the UAE further progress, development and advancement under its wise leadership.

The visit of Sheik Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan comes at a time of increasing bilateral cooperation between the two countries on various levels. Oman is participating in the Dubai 2020 Awards, hosted by the United Arab Emirates, which is the first international Expo in the Arab world and the largest cultural event in the world.

On February 17th, the Dubai Chamber of Commerce held the second session of the Emirati-Omani Economic Forum in the presence of UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Omani Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion Qais bin Mohammed Al-Yousif, Omani Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment Promotion Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, UAE Minister of Foreign Trade, Abdullah Al-Mazroui, President of the Federation of Emirates Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Chairman of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry Reda bin Juma Al-Saleh, along with 120 government officials, businessmen, investors, representatives of the private sector and entrepreneurs from the two countries.

The meeting discussed the frameworks for strengthening economic partnerships between the two countries’ business communities to serve economic relations, raise the level of trade exchange, stimulate investment flows, identify sectors and programs of cooperation at the governmental and private levels in the coming period, and open new channels of communication and partnerships between the two countries’ business communities.

The United Arab Emirates is Oman’s largest trading partner in the world. It is Oman’s biggest exporter and importer, and it accounts for more than 40% of Oman’s total imports from the world, while it accounts for 20% of Oman’s exports to world markets.

The value of non-oil trade between the two countries in 2021 reached more than 46 billion dirhams, 9% growth compared to 2020, and the average growth in trade between the two countries during the last five years was about 10%. In contrast, Oman is the UAE’s second-largest Gulf trading partner and accounts for 20% of its total trade with GCC countries.

In terms of investment, the United Arab Emirates is the largest Arab investor and the third largest global investor in the Sultanate of Oman. It contributes to more than 8.2% of the total FDI stock in Oman. The total value of mutual investment between the two countries was 15 billion dirhams covering almost all economic sectors and activities.

The two fraternal countries have social and cultural relations that are rooted in history, and over the past decades have gone through many milestones that have directly contributed to their consolidation and advancement.

Relations between the UAE and Oman date back decades. The historic visit of the late Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan to the Sultanate of Oman in 1991 was an important turning point in the course of cooperation between the two countries, as a result of which a joint higher committee was formed, the most notable of which was the decision of citizens’ movement between the two countries using the personal identity card instead of passports, and the formation of a high economic committee which conducted many studies to establish a set of joint projects.

Several cultural and educational agreements have been signed between the two countries, with the aim of exchanging visits in various cultural and educational fields in order to benefit from their experiences and develop cooperation.

The fraternal bilateral relations between the two countries have become more cohesive under the wise leadership of Sheik Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, and Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman.
