A recent study conducted by the University of Georgia in the United States has found that consuming appropriate amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids may be key to preventing multiple types of cancer.
According to findings published in the International Journal of Cancer, this study underscores the increasing significance of these nutrients.
The research team, led by Yuqin Zhang, a doctoral student in the College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, analyzed data from a comprehensive study involving over 250,000 individuals in the United Kingdom.

During the follow-up period, approximately 30,000 participants developed various types of cancer, prompting the team to examine the participants’ levels of omega-3 and omega-6 acids.
The study revealed that individuals with high levels of omega-3 acids in their blood were less likely to develop colorectal, gastric, and lung cancers, as well as cancers of the digestive system.
Additionally, individuals with elevated levels of omega-6 acids showed a reduced risk for 14 different types of cancer, including brain cancer, malignant melanoma, and bladder cancer.

“Our study confirmed that higher levels of omega-3 and omega-6 in the body are linked to lower cancer incidence, emphasizing the importance of incorporating these fatty acids into the daily diet,” Zhang explained.
Zhang noted the scientific importance of the study as the first of its kind to identify the role of fatty acids in cancer prevention, rather than relying on other factors such as physical activity, body mass index, or alcohol consumption.
