In the Presidential Elections… Tunisia Crushes the Hopes of the Muslim Brotherhood

The Administrative Court in Tunisia announced yesterday the rejection of two appeals filed by the Muslim Brotherhood leader Abdel Latif Mekki and former Education Minister Naji Jalloul after their candidacies for the presidential elections were denied.

The court’s spokesperson, Fayçal Boukhrra, stated : “The appeal submitted by the Secretary-General of the Labor and Achievement Party, Abdel Latif Mekki, was reviewed, and the appeal was rejected in its entirety.”

Last week, Abdel Latif Mekki’s campaign management announced that they had decided to take legal action to contest the decision of the Independent High Electoral Commission following the rejection of Mekki’s candidacy for the presidential elections.

Boukhrra added that the appellate chambers of the Administrative Court upheld the day before yesterday the Electoral Commission’s decision and rejected the appeal submitted by the President of the National Coalition Party, Naji Jalloul, regarding disputes over candidacies in the first phase of the presidential elections.

Political observers believe that with the competition narrowed down to only two candidates, President Kais Saied is on a clear path to securing a second term in the presidential election.

Last Saturday, the Electoral Commission in Tunisia announced that it had accepted the files of three candidates to run in the presidential election, out of 17 candidates. These candidates are Kais Saied, President of the People’s Movement, Zouhair Maghzaoui, and the founder of the “Azmoun” Movement, Ayachi Zammel. The three candidates managed to complete all the required endorsements and documents to participate in the presidential race.

It is noteworthy that after the Tunisian Muslim Brotherhood failed to spread chaos in the country, they turned their focus toward the elections in the hope of returning to the political scene.
