In Yemen, a Brotherhood leader incites against women’s organizations… Details

A prominent Brotherhood leader in Taiz governorate launched a broad incitement campaign against the leadership of the National Women’s Committee in the governorate against the backdrop of a special report on gender equality, which was presented at a workshop held in the past few days.

According to a statement issued by the National Women’s Committee yesterday, the Brotherhood leader and member of the House of Representatives for the Islah Party, Abdullah Al-Adini, launched an incitement campaign targeting its branch in the city of Taiz, and directed accusations at the committee’s branch of “encouraging vice, perversion, dissolution and pornography”, against the backdrop of the committee’s branch organizing a workshop to review the Beijing Platform report, according to what was reported by the newspaper (Al-Amena).

The branch of the National Women’s Committee in Taiz considered Al-Adini’s statements to be “incitement and encouragement of violence against state institutions and their employees.”

The committee explained that the Beijing Platform report, which Yemen approved, is concerned with gender equality in public rights and duties, and does not address biological aspects, “contrary to what is promoted by the distortion and incitement campaigns.”

The committee stressed that the report does not conflict with the Yemeni constitution, which states that “all citizens are equal in rights and duties,” stressing its rejection of all forms of incitement and distortion targeting its branches and women’s centers, considering this a blatant violation of Yemeni laws and customs.

The committee pointed out that Al-Adini’s description of the adoption of the United Nations charters as a “crime” represents direct incitement against the goals and principles of the September and October revolutions, which stipulated respect for international charters and United Nations organizations.

The committee’s branch stressed that the incitement issued by some clerics poses a serious threat to state institutions and their employees, and contradicts the goals and principles of the Yemeni revolution. It called on the authorities to take strict measures against instigators who threaten social peace in Taiz. It called on political forces, civil society organizations, and women’s activities to condemn and confront these incitement campaigns.

The Committee also noted the worsening levels of violence against women and girls in Yemen, including domestic violence that has reached the point of murder, in addition to economic violence and deprivation of resources. The Committee called on clerics to direct their efforts towards confronting these issues instead of inciting against Yemeni women. It stressed that Yemen, as one of (185) countries that ratified the Beijing Declaration and Platform, is obligated to submit national reports on the progress made in implementing these commitments.
