Indian or Black?.. Trump Plays on Harris’s Origins and the White House Responds

In a controversial interview at the largest annual gathering of Black journalists in America, former U.S. President Donald Trump did not miss the opportunity to attack his main Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.

The Republican presidential candidate questioned during an interview at the annual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists in Chicago on Wednesday whether his Democratic rival Kamala Harris was “Indian” or “Black,” causing a wave of disapproval from an audience of about a thousand people.

The interview started on a tense note when Rachel Scott, an ABC News correspondent, recounted a series of racist comments made by Trump and asked why Black voters supported him. Trump added: “She was Indian from the beginning, and suddenly she became Black.”

Harris, who is of Indian and Jamaican descent, has always identified as Black and Asian. She is the first Black and Asian American to hold the office of Vice President of the United States.

The White House Responds

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to Trump’s remarks during a press briefing: “What he just said is disgusting… It’s offensive.”

Since launching her White House campaign earlier this month, Harris has faced a barrage of sexist and racist attacks online, with some far-right accounts questioning her racial identity.

Republican Party leaders have urged lawmakers to refrain from personal attacks and focus on her political positions.
