Iraq Fears Fallout from Tehran-Washington Tensions
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani warned that any “tension” between the United States and Iran, or any tension between the countries of the region, will reflect negatively on his country
In press statements, Al Sudani expressed his hope that a new meeting between Saudi Arabia and Iran would be held in Baghdad “in the coming weeks”.
“The two countries (Saudi Arabia and Iran) are keen to resume these meetings under our auspices,” he told France 24.
The Iraqi Prime Minister confirmed that his country “does not need [foreign] combat forces,” but added that at the same time Iraq needs cooperation with the US-led international coalition and with all countries involved in the fight against terrorism.
Al Sudani, who visited France on Thursday and signed a strategic partnership agreement between the two countries, praised what he described as a “qualitative leap” in relations between Iraq and France, which took “a strategic course through the signing of a strategic partnership agreement.”
The Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to Paris comes within the context of strengthening partnership, building on economic and investment opportunities, exchanging support in the areas of combating terrorism and extremism, and coordinating between Iraq and France.
