Israeli Officer Under Fire for Secretly Filming Naked Recruits

For eight years, former Israeli officer Dan Sharoni not only secretly filmed female recruits while they were naked but also extended his obsession to civilians.

Two days ago, the military court convicted Lieutenant Colonel Dan Sharoni of using hidden cameras to film naked recruits without their knowledge and some civilians over the span of eight years.

Sharoni was arrested in 2021 for his actions, which included “collecting sexual images of soldiers and some civilians over at least eight years. He was dismissed from service that year.”

The court convicted him of 67 crimes, including:

  • 23 offenses related to indecent assault.
  • 39 offenses related to invasion of privacy.
  • 3 offenses related to illegal computer hacking.
  • One count of attempted indecent assault in a case where he installed a hidden camera in someone’s room but ultimately filmed the person fully clothed.
  • One count of conduct unbecoming a soldier.

The Israeli army said the court “fully accepted the testimonies of the crime victims and rejected the defendant’s narrative that he acted without sexual intent.”

Hidden Cameras in Barracks and Homes

According to the indictment issued in December 2021, Sharoni used numerous hidden cameras, including some placed inside phone chargers, to film soldiers under his command.

He often installed the cameras in soldiers’ barracks and shower areas.

He was also accused of taking soldiers’ phones for seemingly harmless reasons and searching them to see if they had nude or intimate photos, which he then copied onto his device if found.

The indictment listed 49 victims, both female and male, although there may be others. Most of them were soldiers, although he also installed devices in homes, including his own, and therefore filmed civilians as well.

Additionally, he was accused of entering some victims’ rooms while they slept and masturbating while filming them.

Sharoni committed these crimes from 2013 to 2021 while serving in three different units of the Israeli army.
