Man missing after shark attack
A 46-year-old man who used to be a surfer before he was attacked by a shark has been confirmed by South Australian police, adding that he is still missing.
Paramedics were called to a beach near Elston, South Australia, shortly after 10 a.m. on Saturday to help a man after reports of a shark attack.
South Australian police are leading the search for the man, with the help of community members, while South Australian Emergency Services dispatched a maritime rescue boat from Lincoln Harbor.
“A man is believed to have died in the shark attack at Walkers Rocks Beach,” police said in a statement, adding that the 46-year-old man was the only person believed to have been attacked.
A state emergency services spokesman said a team was searching the area using a boat.
The accident occurred near the Reef Fracture, a popular destination for surfers and divers in the area.
With a population of about 1,000, Ellison is known for its rugged coastline and nearby surfing grounds.
The attack comes after a girl who was attacked by a shark in February was killed in a river in Perth, the capital of the state of Western Australia.
