Maya Morsi: These were the Brotherhood’s plans regarding state agreements related to women

Dr. Maya Morsi, the head of the National Women’s Council, said: “In 2012, Muslim Brotherhood deputies asked me to withdraw from all international agreements related to women.”

Maya Morsi revealed in an interview on Extra News channel that the Muslim Brotherhood, listed on terrorism lists, had the desire to abolish the National Women’s Council and turn its presidency into an advisory position. She added that the National Women’s Council is an institution established by a decision from the president, in accordance with the international agreements signed by Egypt. Therefore, the Brotherhood insisted on withdrawing from these international agreements to later abolish the National Women’s Council, confirming that all of this was part of a systematic plan.

She pointed out that the Brotherhood deputies proposed the idea of raising the level of women’s representation and making it an advisor to the president, stating: “In this case, the role of the National Women’s Council would be advisory, not a national mechanism for women’s empowerment. The president could have many advisors, but the mechanism for women’s empowerment should be an independent mechanism under the highest executive authority in the state, with tools and mechanisms for action.”

Morsi said that the Charter of Egyptian Women serves as the mechanism that will be placed on the table for any incoming president, and these are the demands of Egyptian women and the specificities of their demands. Deviating from them would be an unthoughtful and undesirable departure.
