Merkel’s potential successor: Qatar is not the best for the World Cup
The possible successor to German Chancellor Angela Merkel has joined forces against Qatar’s upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup bid.
The conservative candidate to succeed the German Chancellor, Armin Laschet, is the most prominent European politician to publicly announce his opposition to Doha hosting the World Cup, after similar calls in other European countries.
The leader of Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union party told the Bild TV station yesterday, Sunday, that hosting the next soccer World Cup in Qatar in 2022 is “wrong.”
The senior political leader added: “I was not holding the championship in Qatar.. I don’t think Qatar is a good place to host the World Cup.”
But Laschet sidestepped the question of whether the World Cup should be canceled: “This is not for politicians to decide.”
“Qatar has come under fire mainly for its treatment of migrant workers in the country, and rights calls to dissuade Doha from outrageous practices against workers have failed.”
The Guardian newspaper report, still out this year; “, which provided a shocking tally of 6500 workers from five Asian countries killed since Qatar won the World Cup in 2010, is hunting down authorities there.”
During the World Cup qualifiers in March, several national teams, including the German national team, called for human rights in Qatar.
In the United States, a recent poll found that 60% of Americans oppose their national team’s participation in the upcoming World Cup.
