New Houthi Crime: Attack on Residential Village in Taiz

On Wednesday, Houthi militias launched an armed assault on a residential village in the Mawiyah district, east of Taiz province in southern Yemen, drawing strong condemnation from human rights organizations.

Local and human rights sources reported that Houthi militants stormed the village of Akhrak in the Al-Shurman area, deploying seven military patrols in a brutal attack targeting civilians, including women and children.

According to the sources, the attack was led by a Houthi figure known as “Abu Iran,” and involved severe abuses against residents. Several women were assaulted and taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injury.

The militias also arrested three citizens and took them to an unknown location, the sources added.

The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms, a non-governmental human rights coalition, strongly condemned the attack, including the raid on the home of citizen Khaled Qaid Al-Azab.

In a statement, the network described the assault as a “barbaric crime that exposes the behavior of gangs,” noting that the armed raid deeply shocked the residents, who stood helpless, fearing retaliation from the militants.

The statement urged the international community, the United Nations, its special envoy to Yemen, and all human rights organizations and institutions to denounce this crime and the ongoing violations committed by Houthi militias against civilians throughout more than a decade of insurgency.

This crime is part of a series of continued repressive acts by the Houthis, amid growing national and international calls to rein in such practices and hold the perpetrators accountable under international humanitarian law.
