New Israeli Version of the Paramedic Team Incident: What Do the Investigations Say?

New details have been released by the Israeli army about the circumstances surrounding the death of 15 medics and aid workers near Rafah in southern Gaza last month.

The Israeli army stated that investigators are still reviewing evidence related to the incident.
On March 23, 15 paramedics and emergency responders were shot dead and buried in a mass grave. A week later, UN and Palestinian Red Crescent officials discovered their bodies. One man is still missing.

Initially, the Israeli army said it opened fire on vehicles that approached its position “suspiciously” in the dark, without lights or any visible markings.

It claimed to have killed nine militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad who were traveling in vehicles belonging to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

However, the Palestinian Red Crescent released a mobile phone video recorded by one of the victims, showing that the medics were wearing their uniforms and were inside clearly marked ambulances and fire trucks with lights on, as they came under fire from soldiers.

A Palestinian Red Crescent medic, named Mondher Abed and the sole survivor of the incident, also stated that he saw soldiers firing on clearly marked emergency vehicles.

According to an Israeli military official, investigators are reviewing the video, and their findings are expected to be submitted to military leadership later today, Sunday.

Israeli media, citing army sources, reported that at least six of the victims were affiliated with militant groups. However, the official declined to provide any evidence or details about how this determination was made, saying he did not wish to disclose classified information.

He added, “According to our information, there were terrorists, but this investigation is not yet concluded.”

The United Nations and the Palestinian Red Crescent have called for an independent investigation into the incident.

Officials from the Red Crescent stated that 17 medics and emergency workers from the Red Crescent, civil defense, and the United Nations were dispatched to the site following reports of casualties after Israeli airstrikes.

Aside from Abed, who was detained for several hours before being released, one person remains missing.
