Russian security services thwart a terrorist attack and arrest two agents working for Ukraine

Russia announced on Thursday that it had foiled a terrorist attack targeting a senior military official in Saint Petersburg.

According to the website Russia Today, the Federal Security Service (FSB) “prevented a terrorist attack targeting a senior army officer in the city of Saint Petersburg, in the country’s northwest, and arrested two agents of Kyiv’s intelligence services.”

In a statement, the FSB said that “two Russian citizens were planning, under instructions from Ukrainian security services, a terrorist attack against a high-ranking official of the Russian Ministry of Defense in Saint Petersburg, with the aim of assassinating him using an improvised explosive device.”

The statement added that the suspects communicated with Ukrainian services via the Telegram application, confirming their readiness to carry out the operation. They then allegedly retrieved the explosive device from a secret cache and conducted reconnaissance of the targeted officer’s residence.

They subsequently placed the explosive device under the officer’s vehicle before security forces were able to detect and monitor their movements.

This is not the first operation thwarted by Russian security services, as similar attempts have reportedly occurred on several previous occasions.

No official comment has been issued by the Ukrainian authorities so far regarding the claims made in the statement of the Russian Federal Security Service.
