In 2024, global temperatures surpassed the 1.5°C threshold compared to pre-industrial levels, marking the first time in modern history that this limit has been exceeded, according to an analysis by the World Meteorological Organization. The average warming reached 1.55°C compared to the 1850-1900 period, reflecting a long-term trend of rising temperatures.
Two studies published in Nature Climate Change have warned that the world has entered a phase that could last for decades, with global warming exceeding 1.5°C.
According to Agence France-Presse, research conducted in Germany and Austria supports this analysis, indicating that this warming period could persist for at least 20 years. Additionally, the effects associated with this warming—such as heatwaves, droughts, and biodiversity loss—are expected to become more apparent unless strict measures are taken to reduce emissions.
Researchers describe this phase as an “early warning signal” of environmental consequences, emphasizing the urgent need for actions to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
The Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Celeste Saulo, stated that surpassing the 1.5°C threshold in a single year does not signify the failure of the Paris Climate Agreement. However, she pointed out that this event serves as a warning, urging stronger efforts to cut emissions.
The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, aims to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels. However, scientists warn that urgent and effective action is necessary to prevent severe environmental and societal impacts.
