Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan elected UAE president


The Federal Supreme Council unanimously elected Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as president of the United Arab Emirates on Saturday.

According to the Emirates News Agency, the Council held a meeting today at the Mishref Palace in Abu Dhabi under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah; Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman; Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Fujairah; Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Umm Al Quwain; and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.

According to a statement issued by the UAE Ministry of Presidential Affairs, under article 51 of the constitution, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected president of the UAE to succeed the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The Sheikhs and members of the Federal Supreme Council affirmed their extreme commitment to the fulfillment of the original values and principles of the late President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which were derived from the late founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and which consolidated the position of the United Arab Emirates at the regional and global levels and reinforced its various national achievements.

The Council expressed its full confidence that the people of the United Arab Emirates will, as always desired by Zayed and the founders, remain a faithful guardian of the Union and its gains at all levels, calling upon God Almighty to bless Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and to repay his sins in the service of his country and the noble people of the Emirates.

For his part, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by his brothers, the Sheiks, members of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates, and the rulers of the Emirates. He hoped that King Abdullah would grant him success and help him shoulder the responsibility of this great trust and fulfill its right to serve his country and the loyal people of the Emirates.
