Shereen Abu Aqleh “the voice of events in Palestine” is killed while reporting on an Israeli raid


Shereen Abu Aqleh; The icon of the Palestinian press, which has documented all the events on the ground in the Palestinian territories, death is today becoming a sad news item at the forefront of local, Arab and international media.

Affected by an Israeli bullet in the West Bank, Abu Aqleh left, writing the last line on a busy path, leaving a blight in the hearts of those who know and those who don’t.

Today, Abu Aqleh writes the news by her blood; she had been shot in the head during her coverage of the Israeli army incursion into the Jenin camp in the northern West Bank, and she later wrote the painful details about her death.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health had announced earlier on Wednesday, in a statement, that Abu Aqleh was killed by live bullets in the head and that producer Ali Samoudi was injured by Israeli army bullets.

Referring to the possibility of Palestinian fire from the Israeli army, he said that he opened an investigation into the killing of Shereen Abu Aqleh.

Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee tweeted: “Preliminary estimates suggest otherwise than what is published in the Arab media. The journalist, Shereen Abu Aqleh, was killed this morning as a result of Palestinian gunmen’s gunfire in the Jenin refugee camp during her news coverage”.

“We are investigating the possibility of journalists being shot at, possibly by Palestinian gunmen,” he said.

Meanwhile, Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid described the murder of the Palestinian journalist as “sad” and opposed a joint investigation with the Palestinian Authority.

Shereen Abu Aqleh was born in East Jerusalem in 1971. She moved to the Jenin refugee camp at the age of 51 to hear of the shock of all Palestinians.

Palestinians have particularly known Abu Aqleh during its coverage of the second Palestinian intifada, or uprising, which moved from East Jerusalem to all West Bank cities.

Journalists who have dealt with her say that she is distinguished by her high moral character and her respect for all.

Shereen Abu Aqleh belonged to a Christian family in the southern West Bank city of Bethlehem but was born and raised in East Jerusalem.

She studied at the Rosary Sisters School in East Jerusalem before joining the University of Science and Technology in Jordan to study architecture.

Abu Aqleh decided that her future lies in the media and earned a bachelor’s degree from Yarmouk University in Jordan.

Many Palestinians recognized her through her voice before seeing her image on TV.

After graduation, she returned to Palestine and worked in several locations such as the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Voice of Palestine Radio, the Amman Satellite Channel, the Muftah Foundation, Monte Carlo Radio and later on an Arab channel.
