Shocking Admission by the Muslim Brotherhood in Taiz: Looting of Revenues and Refusal to Transfer Them to the Central Bank

In a statement that drew both surprise and criticism, the Taiz military axis loyal to the Al-Islah party — the political arm of Yemen’s Muslim Brotherhood — openly admitted to seizing local revenues and imposing illegal levies, refusing to hand these funds over to the Central Bank of Yemen in Aden, despite the legitimate government’s efforts to unify revenue streams and strengthen financial reform in the country.

Al-Islah has mobilized its activists to launch media attacks against Yemeni Prime Minister Salim bin Brik and Defense Minister General Mohsen al-Daeri following their request that the Taiz axis transfer these resources to official Central Bank accounts as part of reform efforts to unify revenues.

This admission comes just two days after official documents revealed that military units loyal to the Muslim Brotherhood in Taiz had embezzled approximately 2 billion 226 million 25 thousand Yemeni rials from qat taxes, over 600 million rials from fuel and gas levies, and more than 100 million rials monthly from the Immigration and Passport Authority.

According to the documents, the Taiz axis justified these illegal operations by claiming a lack of central support from senior authorities and alleging that Presidential Council President Rashad al-Alimi had referred the matter to local authorities. Government sources condemned these claims as illogical and constituting a violation of the Constitution and law.

Private sources indicate that roughly 30% of the levies imposed by these military units go directly to the Al-Islah party’s economic department in the province, highlighting the party’s persistence in refusing to hand over official resources under flimsy pretexts.

Yemeni journalist Omar Hassan stressed that the core issue in Taiz is not the lack of support for fighters but the widespread levies and the absence of functional state institutions. He affirmed that directing revenues to the Central Bank is the real guarantee for strengthening Taiz’s role as an active member of the state and securing the rights of the province as well as the entitlements of the soldiers.
