Shocking Study: One Third of Men in This Country Support Violence Against Women
More than one third of men in Germany consider violence against women as “acceptable,” according to the results of a study described by human rights advocates as “shocking.” The survey conducted by media group “Funk” revealed that 33% of men between the ages of 18 and 35 admitted to occasionally using physical violence during arguments with their partners. Additionally, 34% acknowledged having engaged in violence against women in the past.
Carsten Kasner, an activist for gender equality from the “Federal Forum Men,” considered these results as “shocking.” In a statement to the “Funk” group, he emphasized the urgent need to address the “problem” of one third of men surveyed downplaying the importance of physical violence against women, calling for swift change.
Startling Figures
The online survey was conducted by “Plan International Germany,” a child support organization, from March 9 to March 21 last year. It involved a thousand men and a thousand women aged between 18 and 35 from across Germany.
In 2021, more than 115,000 women experienced domestic violence, according to data from the German Federal Police. Furthermore, over 300 women were killed by their current or former partners in the same year.
German Minister of Justice, Marco Buschmann, pledged to push for legal amendments to tighten penalties for violence against women. He emphasized the necessity for “gender-based violence” to be met with the “necessary severity” of punishment.
