Snowstorm causes power outages in Ukraine
More than two thousand towns are plunged into darkness due to a powerful snowstorm that swept through Ukraine on Monday.
Ukraine fears a new intensified Russian bombing campaign targeting critical infrastructure this winter, as happened in 2022 when attacks left millions in the cold and dark.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs stated, “In total, 2019 towns in 16 regions were deprived of electricity.”
It added that the storm caused chaos on roads, forcing 1370 trucks to “temporarily stop,” while 840 vehicles were towed.
In the southern city of Odessa, authorities said they provided assistance to 1624 people due to the snow.
Temperatures dropped below zero, with strong winds recorded, according to the same source.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke on Sunday about “extremely difficult weather conditions,” announcing that electricity had been cut off in hundreds of towns.
The Ukrainian operating company “Ukrenego” had reported last week a “difficult” situation for the power grid due to increased consumption associated with the temperature drop, prompting it to urgently import electricity from three neighboring countries.
