Sudan closes border with Central Africa for “security risks”

The Rapid Support Forces, led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dogolo, announced on Wednesday the closure of the border between Sudan and Central Africa due to security risks.

The border between the Sudan and the Central African Republic has been completely closed due to security risks, said Col. Abshir Blael, commander of the joint forces to secure the border between the country and the Central African Republic, in a statement posted on the Rapid Support Forces’s official Facebook page.

“The forces that carried out the border closure are joint forces that included the armed forces and the rapid support forces, in addition to forces from the Central African countries and Chad,” he added. He stressed the existence of security risks and negative practices between the borders, which necessitated coordination between the Sudan and the Central African Republic on the one hand and Chad on the other, to close the borders between the two countries.

Central Africa is in turmoil after armed groups that controlled two-thirds of the country launched an offensive in December 2020 to prevent the re-election of President Faustin Archange Touadera. However, the government managed to retake all the major cities and forced the gunmen to seek refuge in the forests.

For months, armed groups active in Central Africa have been using guerrilla tactics and planting explosives along major roads to delay the advance of pro-government forces.
