Sudan Irrigation Minister: Ennahda Dam negotiations are for mobilization and operation only and we refuse to discuss water quotas
Sudanese Minister of Irrigation Yasser Abbas stressed, Monday, that the negotiations of the Al-Nahda Dam are solely for the filling and operation of the dam, expressing his country’s categorical refusal to discuss water shares.
“Sudan refuses to enter into any talks on Al-Nahda Dam unless the methodology of the negotiations is changed and it is allocated to discuss filling and operation, not water quotas,” Minister Abbas said during a press conference held today before his departure for New York to join the Sudanese delegation to the emergency session of the UN Security Council on Al-Nahda Dam.
The Sudanese Minister of Irrigation called on France to pressure Ethiopia to prevent the unilateral filling of the dam.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Mariam al-Mahdi headed on Sunday to New York where she will meet with her counterparts and the ambassadors of the permanent and non-permanent members of the Security Council to clarify Sudan’s position on the Al-Nahda dam crisis and coordinate efforts and positions.
The presidency of the UN Security Council announced that a meeting will be held next Thursday, July 8th, on the Al-Nahda dam, after receiving a request from Egypt and Sudan because of Ethiopia’s intransigence in reaching an agreement on the dam.
