Sudan nears a political settlement satisfactory to all parties
The head of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, announced the imminence of reaching a political settlement that satisfies all parties in the political process in the country.
“We are getting closer and closer to a satisfactory settlement for all parties to the political process,” Perthes said in statements carried by local Sudanese media.
This came during a meeting on Monday between Sudanese Deputy Chairman of the Council of Sovereignty and Commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Lieutenant General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemideti ” at his office at the presidential palace in Khartoum, the delegation of the tripartite mechanism that includes the UN Secretary General’s envoy and head of the UN Integrated Mission in Support of the Transition in Sudan UNITAMS Volker Perthes.
The delegation also included the African Union Special Representative, Ambassador Mohamed Belaish, and the representative of the IGAD Envoy, Mohamed Younis.
During the meeting, the Vice-President of the Sovereign Council praised the efforts of the tripartite mechanism in bringing together the views of the political parties in the Sudan.
He stressed the importance of reaching a solution to the political crisis in the country through an agreement that paves the way for the formation of a government to complete the transitional period.
For his part, the African Union Special Representative for the Sudan, Ambassador Mohamed Belaish, praised the meeting as “positive and constructive.”
Belaish said the meeting discussed the latest developments in Sudan and the movements led by the Lawyers Syndicate’s steering committee, in addition to the ongoing dialog between political factions.
He stressed the need for the active participation of all parties in the political process to resolve the crisis, return the Sudan to its regional and international environment, address the economic situation, complete the comprehensive peace process, and consolidate the measures that contribute to the stability of the Sudan.
On Sunday, Sudan’s newspapers ‘The Next Day’ and ‘Al-Jarida’ reported that the military component is seeking to form a government of national competencies in the coming days, based on the desire of the international community, while nominating resigned Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok as its chairman and Tijani Al-Sisi as its deputy.
