Sudan: Protesters call for civilian government

Amid unprecedented security measures, tens of thousands of Sudanese have gathered in various cities across the country, calling for civilian rule, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the measures taken by Army Chief Abdel Fattah Al Burhan on 25 October 2021.

The protests were attended by a large number of men, women and youth; “Despite massive tear gas firing and the early closure of the main bridges linking the capital’s three cities, Khartoum, Omdurman, and Khartoum are all maritime.”

Protesters chanted slogans demanding the return of military personnel to their barracks, the formation of a full civil authority and justice for the 121 people killed in the year-long protests.

while popular protests continue; “Some Sudanese political forces say they are seeking a solution to the crisis in cooperation with the tripartite mechanism of the United Nations, the African Union, the IGAD Group, as well as actors in the international community, which is pushing hard for the handover of power to civilians.”

in the same context; The United States, the European Union countries, Japan and South Korea said in a joint statement issued Monday that the draft transitional constitution prepared by the Sudanese Bar Association in September represents a credible and comprehensive framework to resolve the current crisis.

The draft envisions a civil state under federal rule, a military free from political activity and rule, and the integration of military forces into a single professional army.

The draft constitutional framework set out the tasks of the transitional period in reviewing the Juba Peace Agreement signed in October 2020 to reach a just peace that includes all the non-signatory movements.

It also stipulated reforming the judiciary and achieving transitional justice while ensuring that there was no impunity, dismantling the Brotherhood regime and recovering looted public funds during their 30-year rule.

The directives of the Interim Constitution define the tasks of the military institution in defending the sovereignty and protection of the country’s borders and implementing the military and security policies of the State.
