Taliban allows Afghans to leave after August
The German envoy to Afghanistan, Markus Putzel, announces that the Taliban have agreed to let the Afghans leave after the August 31 deadline.
Putzel reported on Twitter that he had met with Taliban deputy chief negotiator Shir Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, who “assured me that provided they have legal documents, the Afghans will have the opportunity to travel on commercial flights after August 31.”
The Pentagon said the US military will continue evacuating Kabul airport until the August 31 deadline if needed.
The last two days will be the priority for evacuating US troops and military equipment, she said.
In a press release, Maj. Gen. William B. Taylor of the U.S. Joint Staff said that more than 10,000 people were currently at Kabul Airport awaiting deportation from Afghanistan.
He added that 90 US military and other international flights have postponed another 19,000 over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of evacuees so far to 88,000. He said that one aircraft leaves every 39 minutes.
Earlier Wednesday, the Pentagon said more than 10,000 people were at Kabul airport waiting to be evacuated from Afghanistan.
