The Best Time to Drink a Cup of Coffee in the Morning
Many people can’t open their eyes in the morning without drinking a cup of coffee or tea, but it turns out you should wait a bit before diving into your favorite beverage.
According to sleep experts, consuming a caffeinated drink immediately upon waking up is not ideal.
Rex Isab, a sleep expert for the Wales Online website, encouraged resisting drinking a cup of coffee until 8:33 a.m. if you wake up at seven-thirty.
He explained, “Drinking coffee very early has no significant benefits; you should instead wait for an hour after waking up to reap its true benefits.”
He added, “When we wake up, our cortisol levels are at their peak, and cortisol, often associated with stress, increases our alertness. So, drinking caffeine while cortisol levels are high can have the opposite effect and make you sleepy during the day.”
Caffeine and Sleep
Rex explained, “During the day, your brain produces a chemical called adenosine, which fundamentally promotes sleep… And if you stayed up late the previous night, it accumulates and enhances your feeling of drowsiness, but caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, keeping you awake. If you have trouble sleeping after drinking coffee all day, that could be the reason.”
He emphasized, “It’s also important not to consume caffeine late in the day, as it could prevent you from sleeping. It is recommended not to consume caffeinated beverages in the six hours leading up to bedtime, especially tea.”
