The illness of King Charles… Here are five important pieces of information about prostate enlargement

King Charles III is recovering after entering a London hospital days ago and recently undergoing corrective surgery for prostate enlargement.

Officials at Buckingham Palace stated that King Charles, aged 75, is in good health following his surgery. He was seen with Camilla during his trip to the same hospital where his son’s wife, Catherine, the Duchess of Wales, is recovering from abdominal surgery.

In mid-January, Buckingham Palace officials announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with prostate enlargement, and his condition is not cancerous.

5 Important Facts About Prostate Enlargement:

  1. The prostate is a gland surrounding the urethra (where urine exits) and produces some of the fluid that includes sperm during ejaculation, according to the National Library of Medicine.
  2. Prostate enlargement is common as men age, and most men reach a certain age will experience it.
  3. The exact cause is unknown, but changes in testicular cells that occur with age may play a role. This condition is also known as “benign prostatic hyperplasia” and does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.
  1. Buckingham Palace did not specify the procedure the king would undergo, but surgery for enlarged prostate is known. The most common type of surgical procedure for prostate enlargement is called transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), where a scope is inserted into the penis to gradually remove the prostate.
  2. Other options include cutting the lower part of the abdomen to remove the prostate (prostatectomy) or using heat or laser to destroy prostate tissue.
