The Kingdom of Holland joins list of countries supporting Moroccan autonomy initiative in Sahara
The Kingdom of the Netherlands considered the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco in 2007 to be a serious and credible contribution to the United Nations-sponsored political process to find a solution to the Sahara issue.
This new position was expressed in a joint statement issued yesterday after talks between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Dutch counterpart, Hubky Huxtra, according to Hespress.
The Netherlands stated that it was clearly engaged in the international dynamic in support of the Moroccan autonomy initiative to end once and for all the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara.
The new Dutch position follows the support expressed by the United States of America, Germany, France, Spain, Arab countries and the Philippines for the autonomy initiative for the Moroccan Sahara regions as the sole basis for resolving this conflict.
In the joint statement, the Netherlands and Morocco reiterated their support for the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, and his efforts to resume “a political process aimed at reaching a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution”, in accordance with the Security Council resolutions and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
