The Link between Parenting and a Child’s Risk of Developing ADHD

A recent study has revealed that two additional factors may increase the risk of a child developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

This study aims to clarify the relationship between parenting and how a child responds to various situations, as well as the potential impact on ADHD development.

A child’s temperament is defined as the innate traits they are born with, which determine how they interact with their environment and handle change. In their research, the scientists observed that active children, when given directive support from their parents, show milder symptoms over time.

The researchers explain that a directive parenting style differs from an authoritarian style; it relies on providing consistent support through physical and verbal guidance when needed.

According to “Parents,” the following parenting styles and their roles in reducing the risk of ADHD are outlined below:

Supportive Parenting

This approach focuses on providing guidance without restricting the child, helping them develop self-regulation skills, which can boost their self-confidence and ability to handle various situations independently.

Independent Parenting

It allows the child to explore the world on their own while receiving support when needed, enhancing their ability to face challenges and fostering a sense of independence.

Conversely, overly strict or lenient parenting styles may weaken a child’s ability to regulate their behavior, making it harder to adapt to the issues associated with ADHD.

Parenting is not fixed; parents may need to adapt their style according to the child’s needs and temperament.

According to the study, children acquire self-regulation skills over time, which means that adjusting parenting styles can help improve their self-sufficiency abilities.
