The Muslim Brotherhood loots aid in Taiz… What’s new?

Recently, in Taiz, under the control of the Al-Islah party, “the arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen”, the issue of stealing and reducing humanitarian aid for those in need has emerged, further exacerbating the suffering of the poor and the needy in the city.

According to Yemeni activists and writers, aid arrives in Taiz in tons of foodstuffs and essential goods, but instead of being distributed to the rightful recipients, this aid is diverted to the warehouses of thieves, traders, and officials of associations collaborating with international organizations, such as the “Humanitarian Access Organization for Partnership and Development,” which is linked to members of the Muslim Brotherhood. This situation worsens the suffering of the residents who are living in difficult conditions due to the war and the blockade imposed by the Houthis, according to Al-Montasaf Net.

Activists confirmed that the deep-rooted corruption in the organizations and among the officials responsible for the aid exacerbates the situation. Instead of being a means of alleviating the population’s suffering, aid becomes a tool for personal gain at the expense of the poor and needy. Furthermore, the majority of this aid goes to party leaders in Taiz – especially the Al-Islah party – along with their families and corrupt circles.

Since the start of the war in Taiz, attempts at corruption and theft of aid have not stopped. This situation requires urgent intervention by the relevant authorities to ensure that the aid reaches those who need it and to hold accountable those responsible for these thefts.

A few days ago, the World Food Program informed its local partners in Taiz that it had to cut 35% of the number of beneficiaries of food aid due to the severe lack of funding for UN projects in Yemen. This measure affected hundreds of thousands of cases in both the liberated areas and areas controlled by the Houthi militias.

According to sources, this reduction led “Care International” to suspend the continuation of aid distribution for fear of clashes with beneficiaries during distribution. Several local organizations also refused to take over the distribution project from the World Food Program.

According to Al-Amn (The Security), the operation carried out by the organization was based on partisan criteria rather than need-based sorting, with Brotherhood elements and their loyalists kept in place.

Sources mentioned that the Humanitarian Access Organization for Partnership and Development, affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, recently took over the distribution process in the three districts of the city: Al-Mu’azzaf, Al-Qahirah, and Sallah. Similarly, the Family Welfare Association, also linked to the group, managed distribution in rural Taiz, reducing the number of cases from the distribution lists according to the percentage set by the World Food Program.
