The White House Guardian: U.S. Approves Sale of Advanced Air Defense Systems to Egypt

The United States has approved the sale of an advanced surface-to-air missile system to Egypt, along with related logistical support and equipment, for an estimated cost of $4.67 billion.

The deal involves the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System), produced by RTX (formerly Raytheon), which has been prominently used by Ukraine in recent months to counter Russian aerial assaults.

According to a statement from the U.S. Department of Defense, the State Department has approved a potential military sale to Egypt that includes NASAMS air defense systems, associated logistical support, and program elements, with an estimated value of $4.67 billion.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the deal “supports the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a major non-NATO ally, which contributes to political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.”

Enhancing Egypt’s Defensive Capabilities

The sale is expected to significantly enhance Egypt’s ability to address current and future aerial threats. While the U.S. provided official confirmation, the Egyptian government had not yet issued a response as of 11:00 GMT.

NASAMS is considered one of the world’s most capable medium-range air defense systems. It integrates advanced radar systems with AIM-120 AMRAAM active-guidance missiles, offering rapid responsiveness and high interception effectiveness.

First deployed in the United States in 2005, NASAMS has since been adopted by multiple countries including Norway, the Netherlands, and Canada. It is also famously deployed to secure Washington D.C., particularly the airspace around the White House.
