They Will Not Go Unpunished: The Accountability Process Tightens the Noose Around Tunisia’s Muslim Brotherhood

Tunisia’s Muslim Brotherhood has failed both in governance and in meeting the expectations of its citizens, yet its remnants embedded within the state continue to manipulate daily life, sowing anger and chaos.

However, the accountability process, initiated following their removal from power several years ago, has not overlooked these covert hands working to extend the disorder and pave the way for a political comeback.

President Kais Saied consistently confirms this process, exposing the organization’s crimes and its desperate attempts to return through lobbying, misinformation, and lies.

During his oversight of a Cabinet meeting, Saied revealed the Muslim Brotherhood’s actions within state institutions. An official statement from the Tunisian presidency, issued this Saturday, quoted Saied as saying: “Many phenomena and practices are abnormal, yet their sources and objectives are known,” referring to sudden water and electricity outages, road blockages, and the spread of rumors.

He added: “Tunisia continues to move forward despite numerous abnormal occurrences affecting public services,” stressing that “the awareness of the Tunisian people and their understanding of all facts and details will thwart anyone attempting to sow doubt, despair, or frustration.”

The president also affirmed: “The choices of the people will be implemented despite the scheming of wrongdoers,” noting that “the greatest safeguard is the deep awareness of the Tunisian people, capable of discerning and demonstrating steadfast will in the face of all types of challenges.”

Lobbies

Saied spoke about the lobbies manipulating distribution, speculation, and monopolies associated with the Muslim Brotherhood, stating: “These lobbies believe they can remain hidden, but the veil has been lifted, and the last layers concealing their misdeeds have fallen.”

He emphasized: “They will not go unpunished. Citizens’ rights to dignity and justice are sacred and cannot be tampered with by the corrupt or their affiliates.”

According to the president, “Legislative revolution alone is insufficient; it must be accompanied by an administrative revolution and crowned by a cultural revolution, with no return to the shameful past.” He added: “Rights are not achieved through promises or wishes, but by the force of just law.”

He stressed that “the social state is not merely a slogan; it concerns all sectors and the entire nation,” noting that “all legislation must meet the expectations of the people, and those responsible for implementing it must believe in it.”

Accountability

Saied continued: “The path must be direct, and accountability must continue according to the law. Those whose inaction has been prolonged will see all obstacles removed to obtain their legitimate rights. Degree holders, imbued with the spirit of a fighter on the front lines, will accept nothing but victory, and the prospects they await will soon open before them.”

These statements come as the Tunisian government reviews appointments made during the period of dominance by Ennahdha, the Muslim Brotherhood-aligned movement, since 2011. Observers say these appointments drained institutions of competence and negatively affected the financial and administrative stability of the state.

Since that time, the Ennahdha movement has propagated corruption and exploited state structures to redistribute resources among its supporters, Tunisian political analysts note.
