Tragedy in Zambia… 30 people trapped under mine debris
More than 30 people are trapped under debris after a mine collapse in Zambia in an area known for unauthorized copper mining.
Zambian Minister of Interior, Jack Mwimbu, stated in Parliament: “There are more than 30 people under the debris” of the collapsed mine in Shingola.
He added, “I want to inform the nation that there is a tragedy unfolding in Shingola,” without providing further details.
The Ministry of Mines has not made any comments, confirming that they will inspect the site in the Shingola area, located 400 kilometers north of the capital, Lusaka.
Zambia is one of the leading copper-producing countries, and the Shingola region hosts one of the world’s largest open-pit copper mines, with some of the mine waste hills reaching approximately 100 meters in height.
