Tunisia: Smuggling of 5 Archaeological Manuscripts Thwarted

Tunisian authorities successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle five archaeological manuscripts in the coastal city of Sfax.

According to a statement from the General Directorate of the National Guard, the relevant authorities received precise information about the activities of a group of individuals involved in an international network trafficking antiquities between Tunisia and a neighboring country.

The statement, reported by local media, detailed that a meticulous security operation was initiated, including gathering information, monitoring the network’s movements, and identifying the means used. This operation led to the arrest of six individuals, including a foreign national, and the seizure of five archaeological manuscripts containing 22 pages, along with the vehicle used in the smuggling attempt.

After consultation with the public prosecutor in Sfax, all members of the group were detained for investigation, and legal procedures were initiated, according to the statement.
