The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale, occurred 23 kilometers north of Awash at a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the surface.
Approximately ten minutes later, a second earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.6, was recorded near the city of Metahara, at a similar depth of 10 kilometers. No immediate reports of casualties or material damages were received following the tremors.
These earthquakes follow a series of repeated seismic events in Ethiopia over the past two weeks, with more than 120 tremors recorded. The year 2024 has set a record for the number of earthquakes compared to previous years.
According to experts, these seismic activities raise questions about the nature of this phenomenon in a region known as one of the most seismically active areas in the world. They emphasize the need for in-depth studies by specialists to determine the potential causes behind the recent increase in seismic activity.
