UAE calls on international community to exert pressure on Houthis
Sheik Shakhbut bin Nahyan Al Nahyan stressed the UAE’s call on the international community to take serious and decisive steps to put meaningful pressure on the Houthi terrorist group.
Sheik Shakhbut bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates, participated in the high-level meeting hosted by the Swiss Confederation, the Kingdom of Sweden and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in support of the humanitarian situation in Yemen, with the participation of a number of donor representatives and international and intergovernmental organizations.
“The international community should reflect on the reasons that led to this deteriorating situation in Yemen, the most important of which is the rejection by the Houthi terrorist group of any political settlement and its refusal to sit with the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy”, he said. It also refuses to accept the fact that the only way to achieve peace is through negotiations.
He praised the UN Security Council’s listing of Houthi as a terrorist group as well as the UN Panel of Experts’ documentation of many of its abuses and violations.
He stated that the risk posed by the Houthi terrorist group to the Yemeni people extended to all, especially children, where it recruited children into the fighting, blackmailed families, prevented the delivery of aid and brutally attacked civilians inside and outside Yemen, so that the future of Yemen was taken hostage by that terrorist militia. Adding that as a result of this blatant intransigence and flagrant violations of international law, the war continues, aggravating the suffering of the Yemeni people
Concluding his speech, Sheik Shakhbut bin Nahyan Al Nahyan affirmed that the UAE supports the efforts of the UN to provide the basic needs of the Yemeni people. He said that the UAE is willing to work alongside the concerned parties and international partners to support the efforts exerted towards advancing the means of recovery and development for the Yemeni people in light of the continuing critical humanitarian situation in Yemen and the increasing humanitarian needs, despite the great efforts made by the international community over the years.
Since 2015, the UAE has provided Yemen with foreign aid worth more than $6.3 billion.
The main focus was on supporting the humanitarian situation through the provision of food, health services and water, as well as ensuring the continuity of public services such as education and electricity, with particular attention to reaching the most vulnerable and vulnerable segments of society, particularly women and children.
