UAE celebrates World Environment Day 2023

The Al Ain Zoo highlighted some of its efforts in nature conservation and wildlife conservation and organized an event at the Sheik Zayed Desert Learning Center on World Environment Day, celebrated on 5 June each year.

The first of the zoo’s achievements is its first nature reserve for the protection and reproduction of the Arabian oryx. This achievement was followed by various programs such as the Arabian sand cat breeding program and the publication of the Dama gazelle conservation strategy.

World Environment Day 2023: Continued efforts over half a century
To make a difference in raising environmental awareness and preserving nature, the zoo hosted an event at the Sheik Zayed Desert Learning Center entitled “Beat Plastic Pollution” on World Environment Day. This event aims to inform all zoo staff about the danger of plastics and the threat they pose to nature and wildlife.

A documentary entitled “Natural Life in Abu Dhabi – Al Dhafra Turtles” will also be presented. This presentation will be followed by several environmental awareness workshops such as plastics identification, waste classification and recycling. As a thank you to all those attending the event, reusable metal water bottles will be distributed to encourage participants to stop using disposable plastic water bottles.

A documentary entitled “Drowning in Plastic” was also presented. Several environmental awareness workshops were organized, including on the plastic identification code, waste classification and recycling. The zoo distributed reusable metal water bottles to visitors and zoo staff to encourage them to stop using disposable plastic water bottles and to opt for more durable materials as an alternative to disposable plastic containers, according to WAM.
