Twelve SSN-AUKUS submarines are set to replace the aging fleet of seven Astute-class submarines dating back to the late 2030s. In addition, four new Dreadnought-class submarines will take over from the older Vanguard-class, bringing the total number of planned submarines to sixteen.
For the first time, the government also fully disclosed its £15 billion investment plan in sovereign warhead programs for submarines, according to The Telegraph.
Defense Secretary John Healey stated: “Our outstanding submariners patrol 24/7 to keep us and our allies safe, but with growing threats, we must act decisively to counter Russian aggression.”

Last Friday, The Telegraph reported that British schoolchildren will be taught about the value of the armed forces, while £1 billion will be allocated to developing AI-powered “kill networks” and launching cyberattacks.
Moreover, six new munitions factories will be built across the UK to ensure the country is combat-ready, with £1.5 billion invested in boosting artillery shell and explosives production.
The British military also plans to acquire 7,000 long-range weapons, including drones that have reshaped modern warfare—as clearly evidenced by the war in Ukraine.
