US source: Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri killed

An Associated Press Twitter correspondent said Tuesday morning that a US raid killed the leader of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization, last weekend, in Afghanistan.

Earlier on Monday, two U.S. officials told Reuters that the Central Intelligence Agency had conducted a drone strike in Afghanistan earlier in the week.

The strike took place in Kabul on Sunday, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. They did not give details about the target or whether there were casualties.

The United States launched a drone attack on a residential building in Kabul earlier this week, the Taliban’s chief spokesman said.

Zabiullah Mujahid said in a statement that the attack took place on Sunday and was condemned by the movement as a violation of “international principles” and the 2020 agreement related to the withdrawal of US forces.
