Video Showing White Officer Killing Black Woman Sparks Outrage Among Americans
An incident has sparked widespread controversy in the United States after footage recorded by a body camera of a white police officer showed him killing a Black woman with schizophrenia in her home.
According to details reported by the Telegraph, the victim, who lived in Illinois, had called emergency services for help after believing that an intruder had entered her home.
Upon the police’s arrival, they confirmed that the house was secure and no intruder was present. However, Officer Sean Grayson noticed a pot of boiling water on the stove and asked the victim to remove it, saying, “We don’t need a fire while we’re here.”
As the victim moved to remove the pot, the officer stepped back. The victim asked him, “Where are you going?” He replied, “Away from the hot water that’s steaming.”
The victim responded, “Away from the hot water that’s steaming? Oh, I will repent of you in the name of Jesus.”
At this point, the officer drew his gun and approached the victim, who had taken cover behind a kitchen table with her hands raised, saying, “You better not do that, I swear to God I will shoot you right in the face.” The victim replied, “I’m sorry.”
The officer continued to move toward the victim and shot her in the face while continuing to instruct her to drop the pot as she lay injured on the ground.
The video, released by the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office, has faced severe criticism on social media, with users accusing the officer of racism and calling for severe punishment.
Officer Grayson, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, and official misconduct.
Grayson has pleaded not guilty in court, which denied his lawyer’s request for bail.
