Violent Earthquake in Japan… Will the “Fukushima Disaster” Repeat?
Concerns have escalated regarding the recurrence of the Fukushima disaster in Japan after the recent earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck the country.
However, the Japanese government denied receiving any reports of problems at nuclear plants after a series of strong earthquakes shook central Japan on Monday.
Yoshimasa Hayashi, government spokesperson, stated, “Verification has been conducted, and it has been confirmed that there are no issues at the Chika nuclear power station in Ishikawa and at other stations at the moment.”
The Nuclear Regulation Authority in Japan also announced that no reports of problems at nuclear power plants along the Sea of Japan coast, including the 5 active reactors at the Ohma and Takahama stations operated by Kansai Electric Power Company in Fukui Prefecture, have been recorded.
The authority mentioned that the Chika station, owned by Hokuriku Electric Power Company in Ishikawa and located at the earthquake’s epicenter, had shut down its reactors before the earthquake as part of routine inspection procedures, and no earthquake-related impacts were observed.
The transportation authority announced the closure of major highways near the earthquake’s epicenter.
