When Did Israel Plan to Resume the Gaza War? Smotrich Responds

Israel’s resumption of war in Gaza has sparked widespread debate both within and outside the country. But when did Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government plan this offensive?

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed that “Israel had planned to resume the war on the Palestinian territory since the appointment of the new Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir,” which took place on March 6, while negotiations to extend the ceasefire were still ongoing in Doha.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Smotrich stated that “the new offensive in Gaza is gradual and entirely different from previous operations.” He explained that this attack aims to destroy Hamas and secure the release of all hostages.

He added: “We are more determined than ever to destroy Hamas.”

Earlier today, the Israeli military announced that it had bombed dozens of targets in Gaza, asserting that “the strikes will continue as long as necessary and will go beyond just airstrikes.”

The intense Israeli bombardment targeted multiple locations, including Gaza City in the north of the enclave, Deir al-Balah in the center, and Khan Younis and Rafah in the south. According to an initial provisional toll, more than 330 people have been killed, a number expected to rise.

The United States has placed the blame for the escalation on Hamas. White House National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes stated that “Hamas could have released the hostages to extend the ceasefire, but instead, it chose to refuse and opted for war.”

Negotiations to extend the ceasefire agreement, which came into effect in Gaza on January 19, began several weeks ago under the mediation of Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. However, they have yet to achieve an extension agreement, as mutual accusations continue between Tel Aviv and Hamas.
