Will the Sudan crisis turn into a civil war?  Details

In light of the ongoing military operations between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces that erupted in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, on April 15th, and with the passage of a month without both parties responding to calls for a ceasefire and sitting down to a dialogue table to resolve their disputes, the future of Sudan as a whole appears to be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. This has led many to fear a devastating civil war.

Escalation of the conflict

Multiple media reports have revealed the danger of the escalating conflict in Sudan, which could become one of the worst civil wars in the world if not contained. There have been numerous international and Arab calls for quick solutions to save the situation in Sudan. As the war continues and the political will of the parties to stop it remains absent, more than 100,000 people have fled the country since the outbreak of the clashes, according to the United Nations. The UNHCR expects that approximately 800,000 people may leave the country in the coming days and weeks if the fighting persists.

Continuation of the crisis

Dr. Ibrahim Nasser, a Sudanese political analyst, says that with the continuation of the fierce fighting between the parties and in the midst of this volatile and fragmented social reality, and with the absence of the state, the crisis will turn into a civil war. He calls for the immediate intervention of the international community and their involvement with the parties to save the country from this major crisis.

The Sudanese analyst added that the Jeddah talks are progressing well, but the fighting is still ongoing. This requires an agreement between the army and the Rapid Support Forces to end the crisis in order to return the country to the democratic path. He emphasized that the parties need to draw a roadmap for the negotiations to halt the military operations and to ensure the end of the conflict and spare the Sudanese people further suffering. He urged for the guarantee of humanitarian aid reaching the affected areas.
