Women, Gambling and Naivety: China Thwarts Three Espionage Plots

China announced on Thursday that it had thwarted three espionage plots, including one involving a government employee who was blackmailed after being lured by a foreign female agent.

The Ministry of State Security stated that “foreign spies are increasingly active in attempting to infiltrate China and steal state secrets,” urging government officials to stay vigilant, though it did not name any specific country.

The ministry expressed regret that “some officials faced severe consequences for leaking sensitive information due to a lack of strong values, beliefs, and a weakening of discipline and adherence to rules.”

One of the highlighted cases involved a provincial government employee identified as “Li,” who fell into a “well-orchestrated seduction trap” during an overseas trip.

“Li was unable to resist the charms of a foreign intelligence agent,” the ministry said. He was later blackmailed with “intimate photos” and, upon returning to China, was forced to hand over official documents. He was sentenced to five years in prison for espionage.

Another case involved a municipal official named “He” who secretly photographed classified documents and sold them to foreign intelligence agencies after losing large sums of money through gambling.

The ministry also referenced a young employee who lost his job after sharing sensitive information with a relative, who in turn transmitted it to foreign intelligence services.

The ministry warned: “Without strong values and principles, employees may fall into the trap of espionage schemes carefully designed by foreign intelligence agencies.”

China and the United States frequently trade accusations of espionage.

In March, a former Chinese engineer was sentenced to death for leaking state secrets to foreign countries.
