Yemen: Houthi missiles spoil Eid al-Adha celebrations

A long years-long siege imposed by the Houthi militia around the Yemeni city of Taiz has ruined the lives of the Yemeni people and prevented them from living in safety.

This was evident yesterday, Monday, after the artillery bombardment launched by the Houthi militias on a residential neighborhood in the city of Taiz in southwestern Yemen stopped a large demonstration organized to celebrate the Eid Al-Adha.

Local sources reported that the shell was fired by the Houthi militia from its positions in the eastern side of Taiz and fell near the Martyrs’ Square, which is crowded with thousands of citizens, men, women and children participating in the Eid Al-Adha march organized by the Cultural Office since the first day of Eid Al-Adha. He added that the security forces rushed immediately after the fall of the shell to close the square and prevented citizens from entering.

The agency continued: “The Houthi attack coincides with the UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Yemen and the continuation of the truce that Houthi militias continue to violate on a daily basis.” In this regard, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, told the Security Council during the meeting that the Houthi group rejects proposals to open roads to the city of Taiz, which has been under siege for over seven years.”
