Youth and relevant authorities… Programs and initial events for the UAE for the COP 28 climate summit

In support of the future for young people, the UAE has supported youth leaders in research and consultancy work on climate and the environment, to which the UAE attaches great importance by following up on international efforts to combat climate change and its serious effects on sustainable development and the future of humanity.

The presidency of the twenty-eighth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change launched 28 new international programs aimed at empowering youth to participate effectively in the Conference process in line with the vision and guidance of leadership that prioritizes youth empowerment.

UAE promotes youth role

The UAE seeks to promote youth participation, voice, knowledge, skills and opportunities, and support their initiatives in climate action. The International Youth Climate Delegates Program aims to raise the voices of the world’s youth and to present their diverse views and priorities in the COP process. The program will select 100 young people, mostly from least developed countries and small island developing States, to participate in climate negotiations and related public-private partnership initiatives. The program also targets indigenous peoples and minority groups, and provides financial support and capacity-building training to selected youth delegates to the program.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber said: “In line with the vision of the leadership in the UAE to support and empower youth and activate their role in building the future, we are pleased to launch the International Youth Climate Delegates Program, which aims to enable 100 young people from all over the world, especially from the least developed countries and small island states, to participate actively in the COP28 process.”

Also at COP28, Minister of Community Development and Youth Climate Pioneer Shama Bint Suhail Al Mazrouei will collaborate with YOUNGO to implement the largest initiative to date to expand the participation of youth from the least represented countries in the climate process, and by assuming the role of youth climate leader at the COP, she will contribute to raising the voices of global youth.

Route to COP 28

The Road to COP 28 event witnessed the participation of many young Emirati cadres who displayed their artworks, including young woman Fatima Al Marzouki, who displayed handicrafts that relied on making women’s handbags, women’s hats, and boxes to preserve collectibles, all made of natural materials, palm leaves in modern shapes.

Empowering young people and enhancing their participation in designing and implementing future directions is a strategic priority for the UAE, and our wise leadership provides the support and care necessary to ensure that young people contribute to a better and sustainable future.

Young people are a major driver of global climate aspiration, as they are the group best placed to have an effective impact by applying their capabilities in finding innovative solutions to the challenges of climate change, in addition to their contribution to raising public societal awareness of the need for all members and components of society to participate in climate action. The UAE is therefore keen to enhance their participation and strong representation in all events and events related to environmental and climate action.
