3 Arrested for Gang-Raping Foreign Tourist in India

Indian authorities, along with a couple, stated that the Indian police arrested 3 men and are searching for 4 others accused of assaulting tourists and gang-raping a woman.

Betambar Singh Kirarwar, a police inspector in Dumka, eastern India, said Saturday that police found the couple, two Spaniards, on Friday by the roadside, apparently beaten.

He added that the two informed the authorities that they were assaulted in an incident involving 7 men.

The couple, who identified themselves as Vincente and Fernanda to the Spanish television channel “Antena 3” in a televised interview on Saturday, said the two men raped Fernanda and repeatedly beat Vincente.

The couple said they camped near the site of the attack because they couldn’t find nearby hotels.

Fernanda, who holds Brazilian and Spanish dual nationality, said in the interview “They raped me, took turns while some watched, and it lasted about two hours”.

Earlier in the week, the couple posted a video describing what happened on their joint Instagram account, where they shared pictures of their motorcycle travels around the world to nearly 200,000 followers. However, the video is no longer available.

In a new video, Vincente and Fernanda, with bruises on their faces, thanked their followers for their support.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sunday it would send representatives to the region and was in contact with the authorities, while its Brazilian counterpart said it had requested the Brazilian citizen via its embassy in New Delhi and was available to provide any possible assistance.

The Dumka police inspector said Saturday that one of the detainees had given the authorities the names of other individuals involved.
